Preparing for Rainy Season: Balcony Drain Maintenance and Safety Tips for the KAUST Community

26 October, 2023

As we anticipate the upcoming rainy season, we kindly request our KAUST’s community members to inspect the drains in the balcony areas of their units. Drains are crucial components of the balcony system that require regular maintenance. One essential yet straightforward maintenance task is to ensure that drains function effectively by routinely cleaning balcony surfaces to remove any dirt or debris, such as leaves and twigs. This practice will help prevent drains from becoming clogged.

We urge community members to conduct a balcony drain test to assess the drainage holes. To do this, pour a bucket of water down all balcony drains. If the water doesn't flow smoothly through the drain or if you have any doubts about the drainage on your balcony, please don't hesitate to contact the FM Call Center team. You can reach them through the 959@FM App or by dialing 0128080959 or sending an email to fmcallcenter@kaust.edu.sa. Additionally, please ensure that floor drains are not obstructed by objects like carpets, plant pots, or any items that might impede or block the flow of water.

We sincerely appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a well-maintained and functional balcony drainage system.

Below are some tips that can help you stay safe in the event of heavy rainfall or flooding within KAUST.

When traveling to and inside KAUST:

  • Leave extra time to make commutes.
  • Do not attempt to drive through standing water.
  • Do not circumvent barricades on campus and in the community; they are for your safety.

Be aware of campus areas that are likely to be closed due to high water.

Take Caution:

  • Relocate vehicles from flood-prone areas.
  • Use alternate entrances to campus away from flood-prone areas.
  • Park on the second level or higher in the parking garage.

Please stay safe and cautious during the upcoming rainy days.
