About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is commonly known by the acronym "BJJ". This is a type of Martial Art that allows the weak to be able to defend against bigger and stronger opponents. It is a form of grappling based on technique and strategy, often compared as a chess game, where the goal is to achieve control of a fight without causing damage to the opponent. See this video for more information.

There are 2 main variants of this martial art: - Sports Jiu-jitsu and Self-defense Jiu-jitsu. At KAUST we practice the sports variation. There is a set of rules, points given by a referee, and the rounds usually have a time limit. One can win a BJJ match by points or by submission, making the opponent tap-out using a joint lock or applying a choke. There is no striking in Sports BJJ.

Events and Activities

We currently have an adults class going twice a week in KAUST. We are also invited to join a class in Jeddah on Thursdays, in a martial-arts academy, with the same coach. The classes usually follow a routine: Salute the coach and colleagues, warm up, technique exemplified by the coach, and we drill the technique a certain amount of time to muscle-memorize it. At the end of the class, we do a few rounds of sparring. The class is also open to both genders and we are establishing a kids-class from 6 years and above.
