HikmahLab: Design engineering after- school workshops

The Office of the Provost, in collaboration with d.heritage2tech, is excited to announce the launch of Hikmah Lab. The Hikmah Lab draws from history and the name derives from the Bayt al-Hikmah, founded in the 7th century as a center of culture, science and technology – the House of Wisdom.  The Hikmah Lab will bring inventions from the Golden Age of Islam into the present day – and use these engineering methods to design and develop solutions for tomorrow’s problems – in an informal, hands-on and experiential way.

The vision for the Hikmah Lab is to harness engineering design methodologies as the catalyst for immersive SCHTEAM (Science, Cultural Heritage, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) experiences which can be offered to the KAUST community and beyond.  Using d.heritage2tech’s thinking routine – Observe, Wonder and Imagine (OWI) – as a tool for developing meaningful and user-centered solutions enriched with cultural heritage, projects will progress through observation, wondering, ideation, production, testing, presentation and exhibition.

Kwarizmi Math Circle

Duration: five x one-hour sessions

Age: 8-10

Through group conversations, students explore, play with, produce examples and counterexamples, make conjectures, and discover mathematical insights.  Mathematics is explored with low-threshold/high-ceiling mathematical problems outside of the typical math curriculum and discovered in an informal environment.

Design Engineering Charrettes

A series of fast-paced collaborative workshops devoted to solving a problem and planning its design solution. Each design charrette will introduce students to the fundamentals of architecture, engineering, science, structures, materials, forms, and spaces. Drawing design inspiration from nature (blooming flowers, animals, shells, spider webs, hurricanes, honeycombs, etc.), we’ll walk through the engineering design process and thinking routines. In addition to STEAM concepts, drawing, designing and rapid prototyping skills will be developed.

Engineering Expedition Series

Duration: Five x two-hour sessions  
Age: 8-16

Join four adventurous siblings on a thrilling expedition in the Middle East in a series of workshops based on different inventions of the Golden Islamic Era. Survival depends on understanding the still relevant, thousand-year old technologies and in applying engineering and mathematical skills.  Each adventure follows an interdisciplinary SCHTEAM-based curriculum,  interweaving history, geography, mathematics, science, cultural heritage, engineering, technology, architecture, and design.  Concepts are learnt through reverse engineering, hands-on building and storytelling, culminating in the design of an original invention by the students.

Digital Design and Fabrication

Duration: 20 x 1.5 hour sessions
Age: 12-17
Cost: SAR 120 per session
Total: SAR2400 + VAT

User-centered design principles, methods and techniques are learned and applied to the design of a personal product which responds to an identified need. Digital design tools and computer-controlled manufacturing processes will be introduced, with the goal of understanding how they are used to achieve the mechanical design and fabrication of the product.

Through an iterative process, students will refine the rapid prototype and evaluate the product’s usability, operation and effectiveness. The ultimate result is a personal technical portfolio and a product rough prototype.  (The optional writing of a formal business plan will help the student to understand how the product creates and delivers value).
