Updates to take-away food packaging

21 January, 2019

Have you noticed a reduction in the use of styrofoam (polystyrene) in food packaging around KAUST? Since KAUST is committed to implementing the highest standards of food safety and quality, as well as sustainability of resources and waste, the Food Safety and Quality team has targeted food providers to reduce the use of styrofoam KAUST-wide.

The styrofoam problem

Styrofoam is bad for both the environment and your health. Switching to re-usable plastic products for take-away food packaging means that the packaging can be used multiple times which ultimately protects not only the enviornment and your health, but your wallet too.

New food containers are being supplied at some food outlets around KAUST to replace styrofoam. These include packages from the following materials: bamboo, paper, grade 5 plastic, and aluminum.

Encouraging use of reusable food containers

Much of the new plastic food packaging being provided around KAUST is freezer, microwave, and dishwasher safe, as well as re-usable. In some cases, you may be charged a small fee for your take-away container. However, we encourage you to clean them and bring them back with you on your next visit.

At Tamimi restaurants, including the Campus Diner, Facility Diner and Recreation Club Restaurants, you can make even more of an impact by supplying your own tupperware container from home.

Thank you for your support in this sustainability and food safety effort.
