UPDATE - April 5, 2020
In line with Community Life sustainability efforts, we had planned to begin charging for plastic bags at Tamimi this coming April 22, Earth Day. As community shopping habits have been impacted by COVID-19, we have taken the decision to postpone charging for plastic bags.
Here are some tips for safe shopping and surface cleaning to keep in mind these during COVID-19.
Thank you for making sustainable lifestyle choices and reducing plastic pollution. We continue to be committed to helping KAUST be #PlasticFree!
Original Announcement - March 1, 2020
Starting April 22, on the occasion of Earth Day, Tamimi Supermarkets at KAUST will start charging 3 SAR per plastic bag at checkout. All proceeds from the sale of single-use plastic grocery bags will be used to support sustainability initiatives throughout the community. Starting April 22
In line with Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 and to promote sustainable practices in the community, Community Life is putting measures in place to encourage you to bring your own reusable bags when shopping.
Are you concerned because you don't have reusable bags, or that you might not have enough? Don't worry, there will be a reusable bag giveaway and education campaign before April 22. Additionally, Tamimi will have several reusable bag options available for purchase at checkout.
Top tip to help remember your bags: Keep your reusable bags where you need them – in your car or in a bag that you always take shopping with you.
Community Life is committed to taking action to reduce single-use plastics. As part of our phased approach, we are working with our service providers to aim to eliminate the most common single-use plastics in KAUST. Learn more.
