Hanging out at the pool or the beach on a hot day is a great way to beat the heat. However, following some basic water safety tips is essential for staying safe and might save a life. November 19-24 was Water Safety Awareness Week in KAUST and the Recreation Team organized a number of educational and fun events. The team took our water mascot, Safy, to visit KAUST Daycare, where they explained the importance of water safety awareness at the pool, and by lakes and rivers, and talked about dangerous situations that can occur in and around water. The children had a great time playing fun games with Safy.
During the Elementary School visit, the team presented an educational video about water rescue techniques. They also discussed how to undertake a simple risk assessment in the water and general principles for getting out of difficulty. The TKS students also had a chance to learn about water safety at a number of Water Safety Clinics held at the Harbor Sports Club (HSC) during the week, where RLSS certified lifeguards introduced them to basic lifeguarding and non-contact rescue techniques. The use of the rescue equipment was also demonstrated.
Water Safety Awareness Week is about raising awareness of water safety across our community and encouraging everyone (and especially our young people) to share the message. Following the positive feedback from participants, the Recreation Team will be organizing water safety events on a regular basis to promote the safe enjoyment of water activities.
