As part of the Harbor Arts and Music Festival, the Stitching Club together with the Jeddah Quilting Bees hosted the first Quilt Exhibit* at KAUST. The show hosted a total of 54 quilts out of which 31 were competing under three different categories: Beginner, Traditional and Art. The quilts displayed an array of talent from both groups that attracted a large crowd from the KAUST community. Exhibit visitors were encouraged to vote for their favorite quilt, as a result, many quilts received the public's praise. The winning quilt was "A Scene from the Past" by Elham Alsabban depicting old Jeddah buildings with 3D effects of vegetable carts which were hand embroidered on the quilt. The Quilt Exhibit has known a success above all expectations and was a highlight of the Festival. Should we expect another Quilt Exhibition next year? Rabab Wereda, club lead says: "we were able through the partnership with the Jeddah Quilting Bees to expand our network to the Riyadh Quilting Guild and Quilters in Dammam, and we started a dialogue on the possibility of hosting a nationwide exhibition." The Stitching Club will continue to offer the KAUST community workshops and might even extend their activities with our neighbors in Thuwal.
Visit the Stitching Club webpage to find out more about the upcoming workshops and how to get involved if you have skills to share.
* The Exhibit was sponsored by four external sponsors: Bernina KSA, Baokbah Trading, Arts & Crafts and Serajah Brand and two internal sponsors: Office of the Arts and The Art Club. External sponsors offered prizes for winning quilts as well as many sewing machines and sewing notions for sale and plenty of giveaways for the community.
