For the past three years, the KAUST Red Sea Rugby Club has been in invited to play in the prestigious Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens competition. The KAUST Red Sea Rugby team comprises of players from across our community including professors, researchers, employees, students, teachers, contractors and service providers.
This year the Red Sea Rugby Club again participated in the Gulf Mens Social section at the Dubai 7th.
On day one of the tournament the team played three games; winning 2 of these matches which meant that the team successfully progressed into the knockout stages of the competition for the 3rd straight year in a row.
In the Quarter Finals the team faced one of the main community league teams in the UAE- the Dubai Tigers RUFC. The KAUST team won 24-12 which progressed the team to the semi-finals and to face the Dubai Lankans which was arguably the best team performance of the weekend running out 31-7 winners to move into the final on Saturday against Beaver Nomads.
The final game was a close fought encounter with the KAUST team coming back from 12-0 down at half time to be in with a chance to win the match in the dying seconds but the final pass went to ground and the opposition swooped on the ball to race the length of the field to win the game 22-14. A terrific effort by all 12 players who participated in the team and -although defeated in the final - it was a fantastic effort from all to perform so well against teams from the UAE who compete regularly.
The Red Sea Rugby Club formed in 2014 and has gone from strength to strength. The team is not only proud of its senior members but boasts a thriving junior Program – which started with just 15 children – to now comprising 125 children playing rugby each week. This success is down to the voluntary contributions of all our coaches and club committee who work hard to provide safe and fun coaching for all of our junior members.
